Coniston grew when each the agrarian village, & to serve local copper and slate mines. It grew inside popularity as a holidaymaker location in a period of the Victorian erthe, thanks partially to the construction of a branch of the Furness Railway, opened to passenger traffic inside 1859. A poet and social revolutionary John Ruskin also popularised a village, buying the mansion Brantwood on the shores of Coniston Water around 1871. Prior to his dying, he rejected a risk to become buried within Westminster Abbey, instead being layed to rest within Coniston.

Coniston occurs as popular spot for hill-walking and rock-climbing; there are fine walks to become wear the nearby Furness Fells and Grizedale Forest, and a bit of of the finest rock in the Flow of any stream District on the eastern face of Dow Crag, three miles from either a village.
